Strengthening Process Safety Through Structured Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
TOMSEY Engineering & Services International Ltd is proud to announce the successful completion of the HAZID (Hazard Identification) and HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) Study Workshop for the Umuseti Produced Water Treatment Project.
The study was conducted to evaluate the design of the Produced Water Treatment Facility, with the primary objective of systematically identifying potential process hazards and operability challenges. Through this structured review, the project team sought to ensure that the proposed facility is safe, reliable, efficient, and fit for purpose throughout its operational lifecycle.

Why HAZID and HAZOP Studies Matter
As oil and gas facilities become increasingly complex, integrating process safety into the design phase is critical for reducing operational risks and ensuring long-term reliability.
HAZID and HAZOP studies provide a structured methodology for identifying hazards, evaluating potential process deviations, and developing practical recommendations before construction and commissioning begin. Conducting these reviews early in the project lifecycle enables organizations to improve design quality, enhance asset integrity, strengthen regulatory compliance and reduce the likelihood of costly modifications during later project stages.

A Collaborative Technical Review
The workshop brought together a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals from PILLAR OIL LTD, J&G Engineering and Construction Services Limited and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Participants represented a broad range of technical disciplines, including:
- Process Safety
- Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
- Operations
- Maintenance
- Instrumentation
- Piping Engineering
- Project Engineering
This collaborative approach ensured that the facility design was reviewed from multiple operational and engineering perspectives, resulting in a comprehensive assessment of potential risks and opportunities for improvement.
Key Outcomes of the Study
Using internationally recognized HAZOP methodologies, the workshop systematically examined process deviations, identified potential hazards and evaluated operability concerns associated with the proposed facility design.
The study enabled stakeholders to:
- Identify potential process hazards and operational risks.
- Evaluate process deviations and their possible causes and consequences.
- Improve design integrity and process reliability.
- Develop practical recommendations to strengthen process safety.
- Enhance operational performance and long-term asset reliability.
- Support compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
The recommendations generated during the workshop will contribute significantly to the safe, efficient and sustainable operation of the Umuseti Produced Water Treatment Facility.
The success of every Process Safety study depends on open collaboration, technical expertise and active stakeholder engagement.

We sincerely appreciate PILLAR OIL LTD, J&G Engineering and Construction Services Limited, NUPRC, and every participant for their valuable technical contributions, constructive discussions and commitment throughout the workshop. Their professionalism and collaborative spirit played a vital role in the successful completion of this important safety review.
